Thanks for visiting our site. Monarch Coffee Roasting Company was founded in 2007 by Lara Booher and Justen Miller. Monarch was conceived by asking ourselves the following question: If we could start a business doing anything we want, what would we do? For us, coffee was the answer.

In April 2007, we purchased a small shade-grown coffee farm high in the mountains of Costa Rica. Located in southern pacific Costa Rica near the Tarrazu region, the farm or finca sits at about 1,300 meters above sea level, borders the San Ramon River and is about 28 miles from the Pacific coast. It is a breathtaking location and one of the only regions in the country where the mountains descend directly into the sea. The coffee produced on the farm is environmentally-friendly and boasts a premium grade of "SHB" meaning "strictly hard bean." This label is reserved for coffees grown above 1,200 meters. As a general rule, the higher coffee is grown, the more dense and flavorful the bean it produces.

Since procuring the finca, we have begun importing and roasting high-grade fair trade coffee beans from our farm and from other coffee regions throughout Costa Rica. We have sharecropping agreements in place on our farm whereby the harvest is split fifty-fifty with the farmers. We take pride in owning a company that is committed to producing the best coffees while maintaining economic and environmental responsibility.
